Michael Okpara was born on December 25, 1920, in Umuegwu-Okpuala, Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria. He attended St. Simon’s Catholic School, Umuahia, and later enrolled in the prestigious Umuahia High School. Okpara furthered his education at the University of Manchester, where he studied agriculture.
Okpara began his political career in the 1950s, joining the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC). He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the Minister of Commerce and Industry in the Eastern Region. In 1959, Okpara was appointed the Premier of Eastern Nigeria, a position he held until 1966.
During his tenure as Premier, Okpara implemented various development projects, including:
*Agricultural development: Okpara introduced new farming techniques, established agricultural research centers, and promoted the use of fertilizers and irrigation systems.
*Infrastructure development: He oversaw the construction of roads, bridges, and buildings, including the famous Enugu Airport.
*Education and healthcare: Okpara expanded educational institutions, established new hospitals, and improved healthcare services in the region.
*Economic development: He promoted industrialization, established the Eastern Nigeria Development Corporation, and encouraged entrepreneurship.
Okpara’s leadership and vision transformed the Eastern Region, earning him the nickname “The Architect of Modern Eastern Nigeria.”
Okpara was overthrown in 1966, and he subsequently retired from politics. He died on December 17, 1984, at the age of 63.
