Let’s Rebuild Nigeria

“If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” – Psalm 11:3.

Nigeria, blessed with abundant human and natural resources, stands at a critical juncture. The nation bleeds from the wounds inflicted by decades of mismanagement, corruption, leadership failures, and societal decay. The dream of our founding fathers – a prosperous, united, and thriving Nigeria – has been eclipsed by the harsh realities of unemployment, insecurity, decaying infrastructure, and a moral crisis. To rebuild Nigeria, we must embark on a journey of national renewal rooted in truth, justice, and collective responsibility.

The Crisis of Leadership and Generational Strangulation

At the heart of Nigeria’s stagnation is the crisis of leadership. Our public offices are filled with individuals who refuse to relinquish power, suffocating the aspirations of the younger generation. The workspace is dominated by an aging elite who view the youth as threats rather than assets. This generational gap has stifled innovation, creativity, and progress. Unlike their predecessors who benefited from scholarships and quality education, today’s youth are abandoned in a system that offers little hope. As Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, “To everything, there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.” It is time for leaders to understand that true legacy is not in how long they occupy power, but in how effectively they nurture the next generation.

The Erosion of Values and the Celebration of Mediocrity

Nigeria’s value system is in disarray. Hard work and integrity are no longer celebrated; instead, wealth – regardless of its source – is glorified. Teachers, engineers, and professionals who build the backbone of any nation are undervalued, while frivolity thrives. The “get rich quick” syndrome has replaced diligence and perseverance. As Proverbs 22:29 states, “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.” Yet, in Nigeria, diligence is often overshadowed by corruption and shortcuts.

Corruption: The Root and the Person

Corruption is not an abstract system; it is embedded in individuals who choose self-interest over national interest. It thrives because we have normalized dishonesty. However, just as corruption is a personal choice, integrity can also be a personal revolution. If one person dares to return stolen wealth with an apology, others will follow. 2 Chronicles 7:14 offers a divine prescription: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” Nigeria’s healing begins with personal accountability.

The Path to National Rebirth

Rebuilding Nigeria requires more than policies; it demands a shift in mindset. Leadership must be redefined as service, not self-aggrandizement. The youth must rise – not with violence, but with vision. Families, religious institutions, and schools must reclaim their role in instilling values of honesty, hard work, and patriotism. Government must invest in education, healthcare, and research, creating an environment where merit thrives over mediocrity.

In conclusion, Nigeria’s problems are man-made, and so are the solutions. It takes courage to tell ourselves the truth, humility to admit our faults, and boldness to change. Like Nehemiah who rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem amidst opposition, we too can rebuild Nigeria if we work together with a shared purpose. “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you” – Isaiah 60:1. The time to arise is NOW!
