TIME WITH AFRICAN GIANTS
Mansa Musa, who ruled the Mali Empire in the 14th century, is often cited as the richest person in history. His wealth came from Mali’s vast gold and salt resources, which were crucial commodities at the time. Musa’s famous pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324 truly showcased his immense wealth. His caravan was legendary, including tens of thousands of soldiers, civilians and servants, along with camels and horses carrying vast amounts of gold. His lavish spending in Cairo reportedly caused the price of gold to plummet for years afterward. Musa’s reign was a golden age for Mali. He invested heavily in infrastructure, building grand mosques and universities that attracted scholars from across the world, most notably in Timbuktu. His legacy is one of immense wealth, but also of a ruler who used his resources to foster culture, education, and religious devotion, leaving a lasting impact on West Africa and the world’s perception of African kingdoms.
