This event happened in Nri, known as the original home of the Igbo people.
In 1996, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was given the title ‘Eze Igbo Gburugburu’, which means ‘Leader of all Igbo people’, by the Adama Nri—the traditional leaders who keep the sacred symbols of power and leadership in Igboland.
This event happened in Nri, known as the original home of the Igbo people.
When they gave Ojukwu the Ofo (a symbol of truth and authority), it meant they trusted him to stand up and fight for what is right for the Igbo people.
His wife, Chief Mrs. Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, was also given a special title, ‘Iyom Onwa Eze Igbo’, and was accepted into the respected group of Igbo women leaders called the Odu Matriarchy.
