Subject: SECURITY POSTURE OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC 28 Years Later

General, sir.

Exactly twenty-eight years ago today, on June 8, 1998, your command ended. On that day, you left behind a nation where the authority of the state was absolute, the borders were fiercely guarded, and the sovereign power of the federal government was never up for debate. You did not negotiate with internal threats; you neutralized them.

But sir, if you were to look at the map of Nigeria this morning, you would barely recognize the territory. The iron-clad stability you maintained has been replaced by a heartbreaking reality. The monopoly of violence has slipped from the hands of the state, and the giant of Africa is currently being ravaged from within.

We respectfully submit this brief on the current state of the nation:

  1. THE FRACTURED FRONTIERS:
Insurgency in the North, The decisive containment you achieved has dissolved. In the Northeast, Boko Haram and ISWAP have waged a war that has lasted over a decade. Just this year, the 2026 Global Terrorism Index reported a staggering 43% increase in terror attacks in Nigeria over the last two years, driven heavily by these factions.
  2. THE HIGHWAYS AND VILLAGES HELD HOSTAGE:
The Northwest and North-Central zones, once peaceful under your watch, are now a theater of war dominated by ruthless bandits. The roads you once secured are now traps. According to comprehensive data from SBM Intelligence, 2,938 Nigerians were kidnapped in the Northwest within a single twelve-month window.

The state has lost its fear factor, General. In August 2025, armed bandits boldly marched into a mosque in Unguwan Mantau, Katsina State, opening fire and killing 32 worshippers during prayers. There was no immediate state response to stop them.

  1. EMERGING SHADOWS:
The security apparatus is stretched to its absolute breaking point. As we speak in 2026, the military is battling a dangerous new jihadist group called the Lakurawa in the Northwest, while simultaneously trying to contain violent separatist factions that frequently paralyze the economy and security of the Southeast.
  2. THE HUMAN TOLL
To give you the starkest picture of how far the nation has drifted: verifiable security reports from the first six weeks of this year, 2026, recorded 1,258 violent deaths across the country. Sir, that is an average of 27 Nigerians killed every single day by non-state actors.

FINAL SALUTE.
General, today the highways are blocked, schools are raided for mass abductions, and farmers cannot access their lands without paying taxes to criminal warlords.

As the nation marks your demise today, millions of ordinary Nigerians look back at the law, order, and absolute discipline of your era with profound nostalgia. They now realize what it means to live in a house without a strong roof.

The command structure has never been the same since you left.

Rest in peace, General. Your absolute stance on national sovereignty is sorely missed. #theamazingabacha
