Nigeria’s Stephen Okechukwu Keshi remains the only West African
Nigeria’s Stephen Okechukwu Keshi remains the only West African to have won the Africa Cup of Nations both as a player and as a coach.
As captain of Nigeria’s victorious squad, he lifted the AFCON trophy in 1994. Nineteen years later, he returned to lead the Super Eagles to continental glory again, this time as head coach, guiding Nigeria to the 2013 AFCON title in South Africa.
Known affectionately as “The Big Boss,” Keshi was more than a football legend. He was a trailblazer who believed in Nigerian talent, gave opportunities to home-based players, and inspired a generation of footballers across Africa.
On June 7, 2016, exactly 10 years ago, Stephen Keshi suffered a heart attack and died on his way to the hospital in Benin City, Edo State. He was just 54 years old.
Though gone, his legacy lives on—in Nigerian football history, in African football folklore, and in the hearts of millions who witnessed his greatness.
Rest in peace, Big Boss. :::
Stephen Keshi is an entity worth exploring further.
