Chief Muriranja wa Mureithi (Chief Iganatio Murai-”Inyathio”
Chief Muriranja wa Mureithi (Chief Iganatio Murai-”Inyathio”
predecessor)-Chief Muriranja was a prominent Kikuyu chief and loyalist who served the British colonial administration in the Fort Hall District (now Murang’a) from 1908 until his death in 1944-for 36 years. It is his death that paved the way for Chief Ignatio Murai to take his position in January 1946.
He was appointed as chief in September 1908 and was a loyal and efficient servant of the British colonial government.
He was appointed to the first Local Native Council in 1925 and continued to serve until his death. The council’s significant progress in African local government was attributed in large part to his contributions.
For his loyalty and service, he was awarded a Certificate of Honour in 1930 and the King’s Silver Medal in 1941.
His leadership was notable for its combination of traditional influence within the Kikuyu community and support for colonial administration. He was considered a “great personality” by both the government and his people.
Muriranja’s tenure predated the height of the Mau Mau Uprising. The movement gained significant momentum after his death and well into the 1950s. His successor, Chief Ignatio Murai (“Inyathio”), oversaw colonial activities in the same area during the Mau Mau period and had to contend with the growing nationalist movement. Unlike Murai and other chiefs who faced the wrath of Mau Mau nationalists, Muriranja’s service took place during a less volatile period of colonial rule.
Muriranja died on August 7, 1944, at Fort Hall Hospital. His death was announced in The Official Gazette by the Acting Governor, who praised him as “a most loyal and efficient servant” and “a friend”.
