The Government of Catalonia has extended an official invitation to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), marking a significant moment in the growing international solidarity between Catalan and Biafran self-determination movements.

According to a statement issued by Mazi Austin Agbanyim, IPOB European Representative, the invitation includes participation in two key events scheduled for September 2026 in Barcelona.

The announcement urges all IPOB members, leaders, and stakeholders to begin preparations for what is described as “historic events.”

Catalonia’s National Day, known as La Diada, commemorates the fall of Barcelona during the War of the Spanish Succession in 1714 and serves as a major annual expression of Catalan identity and aspirations for greater autonomy or independence. IPOB has previously participated in or expressed solidarity with these celebrations, viewing them as aligned with their own campaign for Biafran self-determination.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), currently led by DOS under Chika Edoziem, is a movement advocating for the independence of the Republic of Biafra. IPOB maintains a huge diaspora presence in Europe and has been active in building international alliances.

The planned inauguration of an IPOB Liaison Office in Barcelona is expected to strengthen the movement’s organizational footprint in Europe and facilitate closer coordination with sympathetic regional governments and movements.

This invitation highlights growing transnational links between various European and Biafran self-determination causes. While details remain limited at this stage, the events are anticipated to draw significant participation from the global Biafran community.
