CAPTAIN EMMANUEL ARINZE NWOBOSI: One of the Most Controversial Officers in Nigeria’s January 1966 Coup

Few names in Nigeria’s military history evoke as much debate as Captain Emmanuel Arinze Nwobosi.

On the night of 15 January 1966, the young Nigerian Army officer became one of the principal participants in the military coup that brought an end to Nigeria’s First Republic.
The coup was coordinated by a group of young officers, including Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu, Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna, Major Chris Anuforo, Major Adewale Ademoyega and Captain Emmanuel Nwobosi. (Wikipedia)

Assigned to the Western Region, Nwobosi led the operation in Ibadan.
During the coup, Western Region Premier Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola was killed after resisting arrest at his residence.
The events of that night remain among the most studied and disputed episodes in Nigerian history.

Although the coup removed the civilian government, it did not fully succeed as originally planned.
Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi moved quickly to restore military control and subsequently assumed power as Nigeria’s Head of State, marking the beginning of military rule in the country.

More than sixty years later, the January 1966 coup continues to generate intense historical debate.
Historians still examine its motives, planning and consequences, particularly because it set off a chain of events that led to the July 1966 counter-coup and eventually the Nigerian Civil War.

Later today, I will post Captain Emmanuel Nwobosi’s own interview, where he speaks about his participation in the January 1966 coup and shares his personal account of what happened.

It will give viewers an opportunity to hear directly from one of the men who took part in one of the most consequential events in Nigeria’s history.

History is best understood by examining evidence, listening to different perspectives and comparing them with documented facts.

Did you know Captain Emmanuel Nwobosi was one of the key officers assigned to the Western Region during the January 1966 coup?
