Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, has said his client is serving a life sentence because he chose to fight for his people. Ejimakor made the comment in a post on X on Saturday, July 5, 2026.

In the post, which he headed a “Legal Notice,” Ejimakor pushed back against what he called defamatory claims circulating about Kanu. “Some people need to be reminded that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is in prison for fighting for his people, not for allegedly buying a house in Kenya or for infidelity,” he wrote. He added that “muscular legal actions will ensue” against anyone who keeps making such remarks.

Kanu was convicted on terrorism charges by the Federal High Court in Abuja and sentenced to life imprisonment in November 2025. He is being held at the Sokoto Custodial Centre. His legal team has filed an appeal against both the conviction and the sentence, and the case is now before the Court of Appeal.
