A 1990s Photograph of Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, MKO Abiola and Raymond Dokpesi

This rare newspaper photograph from the early 1990s brings together three influential figures in Nigeria’s political and media history: Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, and Raymond Dokpesi.

At the time, Shehu Musa Yar’Adua was one of Nigeria’s most prominent politicians and a leading advocate for a return to democratic rule. A retired Major General and former Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters under the administration of General Olusegun Obasanjo, he later became a central figure in the political transition programme of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Standing alongside him is M.K.O. Abiola, the renowned businessman, philanthropist, and presumed winner of the 12 June 1993 presidential election, an election widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history. The annulment of that election became a defining moment in the country’s democratic struggle.

Also pictured is Raymond Dokpesi, founder and Chairman of DAAR Communications Plc, whose establishment of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and RayPower FM transformed Nigeria’s private broadcasting industry and expanded independent media across the country.

This photograph captures three men whose careers, though in different fields, intersected during one of the most significant periods in Nigeria’s political evolution.
