Imagine spending your entire life saving others.

For decades, Professor Martin Aghaji built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s respected cardiothoracic surgeons, training young doctors, treating patients, and contributing to the country’s healthcare system. At 74 years old, many would expect him to enjoy the respect that comes with a lifetime of service.

Instead, according to Peter Obi, the elderly professor’s home in Enugu was reportedly raided around 2 a.m. by security operatives. He was allegedly arrested in the presence of his visiting daughter, taken from Enugu to Lagos, and detained for three days.

Obi said the most painful part of the incident was that the professor was eventually released after authorities reportedly admitted that his arrest had been a mistake.

Reacting to the development, Obi described the incident as deeply troubling, arguing that no Nigerian—especially an elderly professional with a lifetime of public service—should be subjected to such treatment without due process.

He warned that incidents like this could discourage professionals from remaining in Nigeria, particularly at a time when the country is already facing a shortage of experienced medical personnel.

Obi also recalled a previous incident involving another medical practitioner in Akwa Ibom State, which reportedly drew strong reactions from the Nigeria Medical Association before the matter was resolved with a public apology.

According to Obi, every Nigerian deserves to be treated with dignity and fairness, regardless of status. He urged security agencies to carry out their responsibilities with professionalism, respect for human rights, and strict adherence to the rule of law.
