The CIA spent years gathering information from captured al-Qaeda members. Eventually, investigators identified a trusted courier known as Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti, who regularly delivered messages for Osama bin Laden.

The courier was secretly tracked to a heavily fortified compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The property stood out because it had unusually high walls, tight security, no internet or telephone connections, and the residents burned their rubbish instead of leaving it for collection.

The CIA watched the compound for months. Analysts noticed a tall man who walked in the courtyard but never left the property. This mysterious individual was believed to be Osama bin Laden.

On 2 May 2011, U.S. Navy SEALs flew by helicopter from Afghanistan to Abbottabad. During the raid, Osama bin Laden was killed. He was not arrested. His identity was later confirmed through DNA testing and other methods.
