WATER: FROM SACRED TO “SATANIC” — A Deliberate Distortion

Rivers and seas have been sacred worldwide : the Nile to Egyptians, the Ganges to Hindus, the Jordan where Christ was baptized. Scripture itself calls water a symbol of the Holy Spirit.

In Igboland too, our ancestors revered streams as sources of life and connection to Chukwu , places of purification and blessing.

But recent Pentecostal theology has quietly rewritten this. Water in our tradition is no longer sacred . It’s now “the abode of malignant spirits,” to be cast out rather than revered.

This has to stop.
The same water holy in Jerusalem, sacred in India, symbolic of the Spirit in Scripture is suddenly “evil” only when it’s ours. Why does water become satanic only in Igboland/ Africa?

This isn’t deliverance. It’s cultural self-erasure dressed as spirituality , teaching us to fear our own rivers while venerating the same symbol everywhere else.

A people taught to fear their water will fear their history, names, and identity because our values are bound to water in one way or another.
Genuine faith doesn’t require hating ourselves.
