How Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea o seized power-47 years ago and still counting.
Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo seized power in Equatorial Guinea on August 3, 1979, by launching a bloody military coup that overthrew his own uncle, Francisco Macías Nguema.
He was serveing as deputy defense minister and prison director under his uncle when he led the military takeover ad subsequently had Macías the uncle executed.
His uncle became the nation’s first president after its 1968 independence and eventually declared himself president for life.
Under his uncle’s regime, Obiang was appointed to several powerful roles, including the military governor of Bioko, the Deputy Minister of Defense, and the director of the infamous Black Beach prison.
Macías’s regime was exceptionally brutal, heavily paranoid, and had ruined the national economy. When Macías began executing members of his own family including Obiang’s brother,Obiang feared for his own survival.
On August 3, 1979, Obiang led a military rebellion. He successfully overthrew his uncle with the strategic assistance of Moroccan mercenaries.
Macías,the uncle fled but was quickly captured, put on trial for genocide and human rights abuses, and subsequently executed by firing squad.
Following the coup, Obiang established control as the president and chairman of the Supreme Military Council. The country nominally returned to civilian rule in 1982 under a new constitution that heavily centralized state power in the hands of the presidency.In 1987, Obiang founded the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea (PDGE), which functioned as the sole legal political party until the early 1990s.
Obiang has continuously held the presidency since 1979, making him the world’s longest-serving current non-royal national leader.

Prayer for today 21 August 2026–Spiritual Maturity
Father, in the mighty and glorious Name of Jesus Christ, I come before You with thanksgiving for You have called me into spiritual growth.
You said in Your Word in Ephesians 4:15 that I am to grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ. Therefore, Father, I ask You to grow me. Do not allow me to remain spiritually immature while calling me deeper into Your purposes.
You said in Your Word in 2 Peter 3:18, grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Let this become reality in me. Let my knowledge of Jesus increase beyond information. Let it become revelation that transforms my character, governs my decisions, and shapes the way I pray.
Father, according to Colossians 1:9, fill me with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. I do not want to remain dependent upon emotional impulses when You have given me Your Word and Your Spirit. Develop spiritual understanding within me so that I can discern what pleases You.
According to Romans 12:2, renew my mind. Transform the way I think until my desires are increasingly aligned with Your good, acceptable, and perfect will.
According to Psalm 139:23–24. search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties. Reveal anything within me that is inconsistent with Your character. Expose motives I have failed to recognise. Bring hidden attitudes into the light. Where there is pride, produce humility. Where there is bitterness, produce forgiveness. Where there is fear, establish faith. Where there is selfish ambition, produce surrender.
Lord, teach me to repent quickly. Do not allow me to become so familiar with spiritual language that I become insensitive to conviction. Your Word says in Proverbs 28:13 that the one who confesses and forsakes sin will obtain mercy. Give me grace not merely to acknowledge sin but to turn away from it.
Father, deepen my hunger for Your Word. According to Psalm 119:97, oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day. Let Scripture become more than something I read because I am supposed to. Make it the source from which I receive wisdom, correction, encouragement, conviction, and direction.
According to Colossians 3:16, let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly. Let Your Word govern my prayer vocabulary. Let Your promises become the foundation of my faith. Let Your commands shape my obedience.
Father, mature my prayer life beyond my own needs. Your Word says in Philippians 2:4, let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Expand my capacity to intercede. Teach me to carry people before You without needing recognition. Give me grace to pray for those who cannot pray for themselves.
Like Paul, let me be able to say that I continually remember others in prayer. According to 1 Timothy 2:1, teach me to offer supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks for all people.
Father, develop perseverance in me. Your Word commands me in Luke 18:1 that I should always pray and not lose heart. Deliver me from interpreting delay as abandonment. Teach me to remain faithful when the answer does not come according to my timetable.
Isaiah 40:31 declares that those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. Teach me to wait without becoming bitter, to trust without becoming anxious, and to continue praying without allowing disappointment to harden my heart.
Father, let my faith become anchored in Your character. According to Hebrews 11:6, without faith it is impossible to please Him. Teach me to approach You believing that You are and that You reward those who diligently seek You.
When circumstances contradict what You have spoken, teach me to trust Your Word. When I cannot understand what You are doing, teach me to trust who You are. When I cannot see the answer, teach me to trust Your wisdom. When I am waiting, teach me to trust Your timing.
Father, make obedience the fruit of my prayer life. James 1:22 commands me to be a doer of the Word and not a hearer only. Therefore, do not allow me to spend hours asking You to change circumstances while refusing to obey what You have already revealed.
Let my prayer life produce the character of Christ. Father, according to John 15:5, Jesus said, “Without Me you can do nothing.” Teach me to remain dependent upon Christ. Let maturity produce deeper dependence, not self-sufficiency.I declare that I am growing in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. I declare that my mind is being renewed by the Word of God. I declare that my prayer life is becoming increasingly aligned with the will of God. I declare that I will not remain spiritually stagnant.
I declare that I will grow in discernment, wisdom, obedience, faith, love, and holiness.
I declare that my prayer life will not merely change my circumstances; it will continually transform me into the image of Christ.
Father, according to Philippians 1:6, I trust that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. Complete Your work in me and make me useful for Your Kingdom. Let my life become evidence that prayer changes the person who prays.
