Abiola was an avid sports enthusiast whose patronage transformed African athletics. While many business magnates sponsor local teams, Abiola’s philanthropic reach in sports was so vast that the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa (SCSA) officially conferred upon him the title of “Pillar of Sports in Africa.”

Abiola established and funded Abiola Babes Football Club in 1980, which quickly grew into a powerhouse in Nigerian football, winning the Nigerian FA Cup multiple times and representing the nation in continental tournaments.

Beyond his own club, Abiola routinely financed national teams across West Africa. When national football associations in West African countries lacked funds for travel, uniforms, or player bonuses, Abiola frequently stepped in with personal checks to keep their campaigns alive.

He financed sports infrastructure, paid for medical treatments of injured athletes across different nations, and instituted grassroots sports competitions to discover young talent. His sports diplomacy built tremendous goodwill for Nigeria across the continent, making him one of the few African figures who could walk into stadiums from Dakar to Nairobi and receive standing ovations.
