The allegation followed the circulation of a letter said to have been issued through the US Embassy in Nigeria and referenced by Tinubu’s associate, Reno Omokri, in defending Tinubu against claims surrounding his records in the United States.

Von Batten-Montague-York, a US-based political advisory and lobbying firm, raised questions over the document’s authenticity, pointing to what it described as several glaring spelling, grammatical and formatting err0rs in the purported official correspondence.

Among the err0rs identified were words such as “czheck” instead of “check” and “maitatins” instead of “maintains.” The firm also questioned the use of “it’s territories” instead of “its territories”, as well as the sentence, “The result of the checks were negative,” which it argued should read “The result of the check was negative.”

Other phrases flagged included “nor information of your department” and “contact me direct” instead of “contact me directly.”

According to the firm, the errors made it difficult to accept the document as an authentic communication from a US government institution without independent verification.

The controversy comes amid renewed attention to Tinubu’s historical records in the United States, following an ongoing legal battle over the release of records held by US federal agencies.

TheCable reported that Omokri recently argued that FBI records relating to Tinubu should not automatically be interpreted as criminal records. He said a distinction existed between ordinary FBI records and criminal records.

Omokri also referred to a purported letter from the FBI transmitted through the US Embassy in Lagos to the Nigerian government. According to him, the document stated that a record check conducted in relation to Tinubu produced a negative result for criminal arrest records, wants or warrants.

However, the US-based firm questioned the credibility of the purported correspondence and called for independent verification before it could be accepted as an authentic US government document.

The firm further warned that if a document presented as an official communication from the US government were found to have been fabricated, the matter could potentially carry serious legal consequences under US law.

The latest controversy is connected to the broader dispute over the release of US records concerning Tinubu. In April 2025, a US federal judge ordered the FBI and DEA to search for and process non-exempt records relating to requests for investigative records concerning Tinubu. Tinubu has since opposed the public release of some of the records, citing privacy protections.

Tinubu forfeited $460,000 to the US government in 1993 in a civil forfeiture proceeding linked to allegations surrounding heroin trafficking. He has not been convicted of a criminal offence in the United States over the matter.
