IGWE II OF AGULU | 1970–1992

His Royal Highness, Igwe E.U. Ejidike, was the second traditional ruler of Agulu and one of the most respected custodians of the community’s history and heritage. He ascended the throne in 1970, at a particularly difficult period in the history of the Igbo people, and remained on the throne until his death in 1992.

Igwe Ejidike’s reign was remembered as a period of relative stability, peace and progressive community leadership in the aftermath of the Nigerian Civil War. At a time when many communities were struggling to rebuild their social and economic lives, he provided the steady leadership and sense of direction that Agulu needed.

He was widely regarded as a ruler who placed fairness, justice and the welfare of his people above personal interests. His approach to traditional leadership earned him the respect of his subjects, and his name became associated with integrity, compassion and responsible governance.

Beyond his achievements as a traditional ruler, Igwe Ejidike was also a notable entrepreneur. He established the famous Igwe Ejidike Buttered Bread brand in Agulu. What began as a local enterprise eventually expanded beyond the community, with branches and distribution reaching Onitsha, parts of Abia State and several areas of Northern Nigeria. The brand became an enduring part of his legacy, demonstrating his ability to combine traditional leadership with enterprise and economic development.

Igwe E.U. Ejidike passed away in 1992, bringing to an end a 22-year reign. Yet his memory has endured among the people of Agulu.

To many who remember his reign, Igwe E.U. Ejidike was more than a traditional ruler; he was a symbol of justice, peace, enterprise and service to the people. He is still regarded by many as one of the finest, and indeed the best, Igwes Agulu has ever had—a leader whose legacy continues to occupy a special place in the history of the community.
