THE MAN WHO CARRIED A CAMERA INTO THE NIGERIAN CIVIL W£R

When people talk about the Nigerian Civil W£r, they often remember the soldiers, commanders and political leaders.

But there were also people who went into that danger0us period without carrying a we€pon.

One of them was Peter Oyeyemi Obe.

Peter Obe was one of Nigeria’s most respected press photographers. Working with the Daily Times, he built a reputation for being the man who could get the picture others could not.

When the Nigerian Civil Wor began in 1967, Obe went beyond simply reporting events from a safe distance. He travelled into areas affected by the conflict, photographing soldiers, civilians and the realities surrounding the war.

His camera became his way of documenting history.

Think about that for a moment.

At a time when communication was limited and many people outside the confl!!ct zones could only depend on newspaper reports, photographs gave Nigerians and the wider world something different—they could actually see some of what was happening.

Obe’s work was not simply about taking pictures. His photographs became part of the historical record of one of the most difficult periods in Nigeria’s history.

The danga√ was real. According to accounts from his family, they often worried about him whenever he was at the war front because they knew how danger0us his assignments could be.

Years later, his photographs from that turbulent period were preserved in book form, helping future generations study the Nigerian crisis through images as well as written accounts.

Peter Obe eventually d!ed in 2013 at the age of 81, leaving behind an enormous photographic record of Nigeria’s history.

His w€apon was not a gun.
His w€apon was a camera.
And his photographs became witnesses to history.
