on this day, September 8, 1971, one of the most notor1ous @rmed robb€rs in Nigeria’s history, Ishola Oyenusi, popularly known as “Dr. Ishola,” was €x€`cuted by f1ring squad at Bar Beach, Lagos.

But who was the man behind the name?

Oyenusi was born in 1938 in Mushin, Lagos.

And how did a young man from Lagos end up becoming one of the most fe@red crimin@ls of his generation?

Oyenusi did not begin life as an @rmed Robb€r

He Reportedly had little formal education and at one point worked as a mechanic apprentice in Lagos. But he became increasingly attracted to the fast mon€y and fl@shy lifestyle that came with crime.

There was something interesting about the name “Doctor.”

Oyenusi was not a medical doctor. In fact, shortly before his €xe`cution, he reportedly explained that he simply liked the name “Doctor” and chose to be called it.

And eventually, the name became famous—or rather, inf@mous.

By the mid-to-late 1960s, Oyenusi had moved into armed robbery and began building a gang around himself. His g@ng specialised in car snatching, bank robberies, factory robb€ries and att@cks on people carrying money.

He became increasingly bold.

One of the stories associated with his early crimin@l career was the theft of a car on Herbert Macaulay Road in Yaba. The vehicle was reportedly later sold, with the proceeds given to his girlfriend. Accounts of this incident differ in some details, but the story became part of the legend surrounding Oyenusi.

His crimin@l career soon became much bigger than car th€ft.

He and his g@ng were linked to major robberies in Lagos, including att@cks on b@nks and businesses. At a time when @rmed robb€ry was becoming a major concern in Nigeria, Oyenusi’s name became one of the most fe@red in Lagos.

But the pol!ce were determined to bring him down.

Oyenusi was arr€sted several times and was even reported to have esc@ped from custody. Each esc@pe added to his growing reput@tion and gave him an almost legendary status among crimin@ls.

But eventually, his luck r@n out.

In March 1971, Oyenusi and members of his gang were involved in an attempted robb€ry at a factory in Lagos. A police officer was k!ll€d during the operation, and the g@ng was eventually c@ptured.

This time, there would be no esc@pe.

Oyenusi was tried and $en`tenc€d to de@th.

Then came September 8, 1971.

Thousands of people gathered at Bar Beach in Lagos to witness the exe`cut10n of the man who had become one of Nigeria’s most notor1ous @rmed robb€rs.

The fe@red g@ng leader was brought out for the final time.

Dr. Ishola Oyenusi was €xe`cuted by f1ring squad.

His €xecution was part of the milit@ry government's aggr€ssive campaign against @rmed robbery, which included public firing-squad €xecutions.

His de@th marked the end of a crimin@l career that had t€rror1sed Lagos and made his name one of the most recognisable in Nigeria’s early history of @rmed robb€ry.

Years later, his story would continue to appear in newspapers, books, documentaries and even films.

From a young man in Lagos to a notor1ous g@ng leader, and finally to the f1ring squad at Bar Beach.

September 8, 1971 — the day the reign of “Dr. Ishola” came to an end.

Today, September 8, 2026, marks 55 years since his €x€cut1on.
