27 years ago today, African leaders gathered in Sirte, Libya, and adopted the historic Sirte Declaration—a defining step toward transforming the Organization of African Unity into what would become the African Union.

While the OAU’s mission was centered on total liberation and the end of colonial rule, 9/9/99 marked a new chapter in our collective vision: deeper economic integration, continental unity, cooperation, and African self-determination.

Pan-Africanism was never meant to remain a chapter in history. It is an ongoing assignment.

Today, we remember the vision that brought Africa closer together—and ask ourselves:
