EMPEROR MENELIK II: THE EMPEROR WHO DEFEATED ITALY AT ADWA
EMPEROR MENELIK II: THE EMPEROR WHO DEFEATED ITALY AT ADWA 🇪🇹👑🔥
What happens when a European power tries to colonize an African kingdom—and the African army refuses to surrender?
The answer can be found in the extraordinary story of Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia.
Emperor Menelik II (born Sahle Maryam; August 17, 1844 – December 12, 1913) was Emperor of Ethiopia from 1889 until his death.
He is celebrated across Africa and the global Black diaspora for unifying the nation and decisively defeating an invading Italian army at the Battle of Adwa in 1896—a historic triumph that preserved Ethiopian independence during the “Scramble for Africa.”
But the story of Menelik II did not begin on the battlefield.
It began with captivity.
đź‘‘ LIFE AND HISTORICAL TIMELINE
đź”’ BIRTH AND CAPTIVITY
August 17, 1844
Born Sahle Maryam in Ankober, Shewa.
Following the death of his father, Prince Haile-Melekot, young Sahle Maryam was held captive at the mountain fortress of Amba Magdala by Emperor Tewodros II for ten years before escaping in 1865.
Imagine spending your childhood in captivity—only to eventually return and become one of Africa’s most consequential rulers.
đź‘‘ KING OF SHEWA
1865–1889
Menelik reclaimed the throne of Shewa as King (Negus).
Over two decades, he expanded his realm southward and east while acquiring modern European firearms to build a formidable military.
Those weapons would later become extremely important.
Because Menelik understood something that many African rulers faced during the Scramble for Africa:
A nation could not defend its independence without preparing for the new kind of warfare being brought to the continent.
đź‘‘ CORONATION AS EMPEROR
November 3, 1889
Following the death of Emperor Yohannes IV, Menelik was crowned Emperor of Ethiopia.
He chose his crown name in homage to Menelik I, the legendary son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba.
But what happened next would place Ethiopia directly in the path of European expansion.
🇮🇹 THE TREATY OF WUCHALE DECEPTION
1889–1893
Menelik signed the Treaty of Wuchale with Italy.
However, the Italian translation altered Article 17 to claim Ethiopia was an Italian protectorate.
When Menelik discovered the trickery, he repudiated the treaty, famously declaring:
“Italy can have Ethiopia when I am the emperor of Rome.”
But Italy did not simply abandon its ambitions.
The disagreement would eventually lead to war.
And that war would change African history forever.
⚔️ THE BATTLE OF ADWA
March 1, 1896
Menelik led a unified force of over 100,000 Ethiopian soldiers to crush an invading Italian army at Adwa.
The victory forced European powers to formally recognize Ethiopia’s full sovereignty.
Think about what that meant in the era of the Scramble for Africa.
Across much of the continent, European powers were expanding their colonial territories.
Yet Ethiopia remained independent.
And the Battle of Adwa became one of the most powerful symbols of African resistance to colonial conquest.
🏗️ STATE MODERNIZATION
1896–1909
Menelik’s legacy was not limited to warfare.
He established Addis Ababa as the national capital and introduced:
- Electricity
- Telegraph systems
- Telephone systems
- Modern schools
- Hospitals
- A central bank
- The railway connecting Addis Ababa to Djibouti
This raises an important question:
What if Menelik’s greatest achievement was not simply defeating an invading army—but preparing Ethiopia to survive in a rapidly changing world?
🕯️ ILLNESS AND DEATH
December 12, 1913
Menelik suffered a severe stroke in October 1909, causing power to transition to his wife, Empress Taytu, and a council of regents.
He eventually passed away in Addis Ababa on December 12, 1913, at the age of 69.
But his story did not end with his death.
His victory at Adwa continued to resonate far beyond Ethiopia.
🇪🇹 THE TREATY TRICKERY & THE BATTLE OF ADWA
During European colonization, Italy sought to build an East African empire.
When Menelik signed the Treaty of Wuchale in 1889, the Italian delegation deliberately manipulated the wording.
🇪🇹 AMHARIC VERSION:
Stated that Ethiopia could use Italy’s diplomatic services for foreign relations if it wished.
🇮🇹 ITALIAN VERSION:
Stated that Ethiopia must conduct all foreign affairs through Rome, effectively making Ethiopia an Italian protectorate.
The difference was enormous.
When Italy attempted to enforce its claim by military invasion, Menelik mobilized regional leaders across ethnic lines.
Armed with modern weaponry he had strategically stockpiled, the Ethiopian forces routed the Italian army at Adwa.
It marked the first time in modern history that an African nation decisively defeated a European colonial force in open war.
And that is why Adwa became much more than a battle.
It became a symbol.
✊🏿 THE PAN-AFRICAN LEGACY OF MENELIK II
🌍 PROOF OF AFRICAN SOVEREIGNTY
Adwa shattered the myth of European invincibility and inspired anti-colonial struggles across Africa, the Caribbean, and North America.
The message was powerful:
European armies could be defeated.
🟢🟡🔴 PAN-AFRICAN COLORS
Ethiopia’s tri-color flag—green, yellow, and red—solidified during Menelik’s era and was later adopted by dozens of newly independent African states as the universal symbol of liberation.
🏛️ STATE BUILDING
By introducing modern communication networks, national currency, and international diplomacy, Menelik ensured Ethiopia was equipped to interact with world powers as an equal.
His legacy therefore extends beyond the battlefield.
It is also a story of state-building, diplomacy, military preparation, modernization, and African sovereignty.
đź‘‘ EMPEROR MENELIK II AND THE BATTLE OF ADWA
The story of Menelik II raises a question that is still worth asking today:
How different might African history have been if more African states had possessed the military preparation, political unity, diplomatic strategy, and resources to resist European conquest in the same way Ethiopia did?
And perhaps the most fascinating part is this:
Adwa was not won by one man alone.
It required the mobilization of thousands of Ethiopians, regional leaders, soldiers, communities, and resources behind a common cause.
That is what makes the story of Adwa so powerful.
It was not simply the story of an emperor.
It was the story of a nation refusing to surrender its sovereignty.
🇪🇹👑🔥 MENELIK II. ADWA. ETHIOPIAN INDEPENDENCE.
A chapter of African history that deserves to be remembered.
