Nelson Mandela lost 27 years of his life behind prison walls.

But perhaps his greatest pain was what happened outside those walls.

In 1968, while Mandela was imprisoned, his mother died. He was not allowed to attend her funeral.

Then, in 1969, tragedy struck again.

His eldest son, Thembi, was killed in a car accident at just 24 years old.

Mandela was thousands of miles away behind prison walls.

He was not allowed to attend his own son’s funeral. 💔

Imagine receiving the news that your child is gone… and being told you cannot go home to bury him.

He also lost precious years watching his children grow up from a distance. His marriage to Winnie eventually ended in divorce in 1996. (Nelson Mandela Foundation)

When Mandela finally walked out of prison on 11 February 1990, he had spent more than 27 years in confinement.

He had gained freedom—but he could never get those lost years back.

He lost time.
He lost family moments.
He lost his mother.
He lost his son.
