While in Robben Island prison, Mandela’s number was 46664.
For 27 years he was not allowed to write freely. So he wrote in SECRET.
What was in the letter?
In 1969, his son Thembi died in a car crash. Prison guards hid the news for weeks. When Mandela heard, he was not allowed to go to funeral.
He wrote a letter to his family he could never send.
He wrote:
“Do not worry about me. Worry about the child who will be born free.”
That letter was smuggled out in a notebook. Prisoners hid it inside Bible pages.
Years later, when President Botha offered Mandela freedom in 1985 if he stopped fighting, Mandela remembered his son’s death and his letter.
He said: “I cannot sell my birthright while my people are still in prison.”
ONE LETTER = 27 years of strength.
