AFRICA HAD KINGS, EMPIRES, GOLD, AND POWER… SO WHAT HAPPENED?
Before colonial rule, Africa was home to powerful kingdoms, wealthy trading cities, great leaders, and remarkable civilizations.
The Mali Empire became famous for its wealth under Mansa Musa. The Kingdom of Aksum developed powerful trade networks. Great Zimbabwe built impressive stone structures, while the Kingdom of Kongo maintained extensive political and commercial connections.
But Africa’s history is more than the story of what existed before colonialism. It is also the story of resistance, independence, struggles for unity, and the continuing fight to turn the continent’s enormous potential into prosperity for its people.
Here is the question that still deserves an honest debate:
If Africa once had powerful kingdoms, valuable resources, and great civilizations, what are the biggest reasons many African countries still struggle with poverty and underdevelopment today?
Was it colonial exploitation? Leadership after independence? Foreign interference? Weak institutions? Or a combination of all these factors?
History deserves more than slogans. It deserves honest conversations.
