🇹🇬 THE PRESIDENT WHO DIED TWO DAYS FROM FREEDOM 🇹🇬

January 13, 1963. Lomé, Togo.
President Sylvanus Olympio is shot dead at the gate of the US embassy, where he’d fled for safety.
The official story: a mutiny over unpaid soldiers’ wages. Sergeant Étienne Eyadéma later admitted it himself: “He could not stay there. There would have been demonstrations. He would not move. I shot him.”

That explanation is true. It’s also not the whole story.

Olympio wasn’t just Togo’s first president. He was an economist who spent his presidency chasing one goal: pulling Togo out of the CFA franc — the currency France had imposed on its former colonies — and replacing it with an independent national currency, reportedly to be backed by the German Bundesbank.

He’d already founded the Banque Centrale du Togo in 1962. By multiple accounts, he was just days away from signing the final withdrawal agreement when he was killed.

The soldiers who killed him had served in the French military. Their grievance over not being integrated into Togo’s small army was real — but the timing, with Olympio on the verge of monetary independence, is hard to ignore.

Within days of his death, his brother-in-law Nicolas Grunitzky was installed as president. The currency plan was scrapped. Togo signed new cooperation agreements — and stayed in the CFA franc zone.
The same currency Olympio died trying to leave is still circulating in Togo today, over 60 years later.
The man who pulled the trigger didn’t face justice. Eyadéma overthrew Grunitzky in 1967 and ruled Togo for the next 38 years.

Historians still debate exactly how much the currency question weighed against the soldiers’ own grievances in sparking the coup — it’s genuinely contested, not a settled conspiracy. But what’s not contested is this: Africa’s first post-independence presidential assassination happened to a leader actively negotiating his country’s financial sovereignty. And the negotiations ended with him.
