WHY IS ABA CALLED ENYIMBA CITY? π
Have you ever wondered why Aba, the commercial city of Abia State, is popularly known as Enyimba City?
According to an oral tradition narrated by the late traditional ruler, Eze Isaac Ikonne, some Ngwa people from Isiala Ngwa were searching for a new settlement when an elephant reportedly appeared and began moving eastward, clearing a path through the thick forest.
The people followed the elephant for over 30 kilometres until it stopped and disappeared at a place now known as Ehi Road in Aba.
According to this traditional account, the people settled in the area where the elephant disappeared.
This story became associated with Aba’s nickname, Enyimba City, with Enyi meaning elephant in Igbo.
The elephant came to symbolize the city’s identity, strength and resilience.
Today, the name Enyimba is so deeply connected to Aba that the city’s famous football club, Enyimba International FC, also bears the name.
