THE STORY OF WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON AND MYSELF ON OUR WAY BACK FROM THE ABURI ACCORD CONFERENCE.
Dear Mortals, as May 30th approaches,I felt that i should share this story with you all again. I am aware that many of you already know this story but I have the urge to remind you all again of the events that led to the historic date that is nearly upon us.
General Ankrah drove I and Gowon to the airport by himself after the meeting at Aburi.
During the meeting, Gowon and I agreed on everything, our case was so clear and I even believed at the end of the Aburi conference, that Gowon was not the problem, but some ambassadors in Lagos who were pressing for something else.
On our way to the airport after the meeting, General Ankrah who was with Gowon and myself suddenly shook his head during the course of our journey and said, “oh thank you, if only we can go on like this everything will be alright”
And in response to this, I decided to be a bit dramatic, which I always do from time to time even here in the underworld.
I picked up Gowon’s hand and placed it on General Ankrah’s lap, who was sitting between the both of us and I placed my other hand on top of his own hand, then I told General Ankrah to hold our hands because I wanted to say something.
General Ankrah put his hands on top of our hands and I told him, that I wanted to assure him that I am totally satisfied with everything we have discussed in the conference and I went further to mention something that I did not say in the conference which is, that once everything we agreed upon in the Aburi conference has been fully implemented, I would ask him for a favour and that favour is that I wanted to be the one to propose Gowon as the head of State of Nigeria.
I believe General Ankrah was pleased with my request at the time but unfortunately by the time we got to Nigeria, the agreement we had in Aburi was not implemented.
This moved me into making the declaration of the Eastern Region’s secession from Nigeria, to establish the independent sovereign state of the Republic of Biafra.
