ZWANGENDABA

The Ndwandwe kingdom occupied parts of present day Kwazulu Natal, Eswatini, and southern Mozambique. The Ndwandwe kingdom was ruled by Zwide kaLanga, among Zwide’s most important commanders were Soshangane and Zwangendaba.

Shaka kaSenzangakhona shattered the Ndwandwe kingdom, forcing it’s leaders and followers to scatter in different directions. After the collapse of Ndwandwe power, three extraordinary migrations began.

Soshangane and followers crossed present day Eswatini, Southern Mozambique, and he conquered and incorporated Tsonga, Ndau and other people by the 1830s he had established the powerful Gaza empire.

Mzilikazi and followers fled northwest-ward crossing present day Gauteng, Botswana and into Zimbabwe. Along the way absorbing other communities. Eventually established the Matabele kingdom around modern day Bulawayo.

ZWANGENDABA

Among all these migrations, Zwangendaba’s was the most remarkable. After the defeat of Ndwandwe, Zwangendaba led thousands of followers northward. His journey covered nearly 3000 kilometers, one of the longest migrations in African history.
He moved through southern Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania. By the time his migration ended, his people had travelled further than both Mzilikazi’s and Soshangane’s people.

One of the celebrated events in Ngoni history occured in 1835. Zwangendaba’s people crossed the Zambezi river during a solar eclipse. Ngoni oral traditions portrays this event vividly. The eclipse frightened many followers who interpreted it as a supernatural sign. The crossing became a foundational moment in Ngoni identity.

Zwangendaba did not create a single centralised empire. After his death around 1848, his followers split into several Ngoni kingdoms spread across Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania. Today, many Ngoni communities in these countries trace their ancestry to Zwangendaba’s migration.
