How Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe Started His Musical Journey and Became a Highlife Legend

Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe was born on 17 March 1936 in Atani, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. His love for music began at a young age, and he developed a passion for singing and playing musical instruments while growing up.

In the early 1960s, Osadebe joined Stephen Amechi’s Empire Rhythm Orchestra, where he gained valuable experience as a vocalist and performer. After the Nigerian Civil War, he formed his own band, Nigeria Sound Makers International, which became one of the most respected highlife bands in Africa.

Osadebe’s smooth voice, rich Igbo proverbs, and philosophical lyrics made him stand out. His songs celebrated love, peace, unity, hard work, and contentment, earning him admiration across Nigeria and beyond.

His greatest breakthrough came in 1984 with the release of “Osondi Owendi,” one of the biggest-selling highlife albums in African history. The song became an anthem, and its message—”one man’s meat is another man’s poison”—remains popular to this day.

Throughout a career that spanned more than four decades, Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe recorded hundreds of songs, won numerous honours, performed across Africa, Europe, and North America, and became widely known as one of the greatest Igbo highlife musicians of all time. His music continues to inspire new generations long after his passing on 11 May 2007.
