The Inspiring Story of Chief Oliver De Coque

Chief Oliver Sunday Akanite, popularly known as Oliver De Coque, was born on April 14, 1947, in Ezinifite, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria.

From an early age, he developed a deep passion for music and began playing the guitar as a young boy. He was inspired by legendary Congolese guitarist Dr. Nico Kasanda and the Nigerian highlife tradition, spending years mastering his unique guitar style.

Oliver De Coque started his professional music career in the 1960s, performing with local bands before forming his own group, Oliver De Coque and His Expo ’76 Ogene Sound Super of Africa.

He created a distinctive sound by blending traditional Igbo Ogene music with modern highlife, rich guitar melodies, and Congolese influences. His energetic stage performances and exceptional guitar skills quickly earned him recognition across Nigeria and beyond.

His breakthrough came in the late 1970s and 1980s with hit albums such as People’s Club of Nigeria, Identity, Ana Enwe Obodo Enwe, and many others.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Oliver De Coque recorded well over 70 albums, making him one of the most prolific highlife musicians in African history.

His immense contributions to music earned him the traditional chieftaincy title “Chief”, and he became one of the greatest ambassadors of Igbo highlife music.

Through his songs, he celebrated Igbo culture, promoted unity, and entertained millions of fans across Africa and the world.

Chief Oliver De Coque passed away on June 20, 2008, but his music and legacy continue to inspire generations.
