ZIMBABWE Extends President Mnangagwa’s Rule to 2030, Ends Direct Presidential Elections

Zimbabwe has approved constitutional amendments that extend the tenure of 83-year-old President Emmerson Mnangagwa until 2030 and replace direct presidential elections with a system in which the president is selected by Parliament.

The changes have sparked strong criticism from opposition parties and civil society groups, who argue that the reforms further strengthen the ruling ZANU-PF’s hold on power and weaken democratic accountability.

Supporters, however, maintain that the amendments are intended to promote political stability and continuity in governance.

What are your thoughts on replacing direct presidential elections with parliamentary selection?
