The Defence Minister has revealed that bandits holding dozens of schoolchildren captive in Oyo State have threatened to kill them all if security forces advance on their hideout.

The minister made the disclosure during an emergency security briefing on Wednesday. He said the kidnappers are using the children as human shields to stop troops from rescuing them.

According to the minister, the bandits have also made a specific demand: they want their commanders, who are currently in police custody, released in exchange for the pupils’ freedom.

The abduction happened earlier this week when armed gunmen stormed a school in Oyo State and took away an unknown number of students. Local reports say at least 20 pupils are still missing.
Security forces have located the bandits’ camp deep in the forest, but any rescue attempt risks triggering a mass killing.
The Defence Minister said the military is “exploring all options” but will prioritize the children’s safety. Negotiators are trying to open a dialogue with the kidnappers.
