Of all the countries that took in Biafra’s children, Gabon took the most, and it is in Gabon that the most troubling questions still hang.

The small, oil-rich country under President Omar Bongo had recognised Biafra and opened its doors to its youngest victims. Caritas was caring for around 750 Biafran children in Gabon by January 1969; by that July the number had climbed past two thousand. They were housed in children’s homes and relief camps around the capital, Libreville, and the port of Owendo. France, deeply involved in backing Biafra, set up a military field hospital in Libreville where hundreds of injured and starving children were treated, with the Order of Malta taking over their care once they were strong enough to leave the wards.

For a while it was a genuine rescue. Children who would almost certainly have died in the blockade were fed, treated and kept alive on Gabonese soil. But when the war ended, Gabon became one of the hardest places from which to bring the children home. Bongo’s government had sided with Biafra and openly doubted that defeated Nigeria was stable enough to receive them safely. Repatriation stalled for months while diplomats argued, and it was only in mid-1970 that a formal agreement unlocked the return.

By then the trail on some children had gone cold. The camps had been run by several different agencies, records were uneven, and a number of the youngest had been taken in by Gabonese households. Not every child in those Libreville homes could later be matched to a family in Nigeria, and not everyone was returned.

How many stayed behind, quietly folded into Gabonese life, has never been firmly established. What is certain is that the Libreville and Owendo camps were both a lifeline and a place where some Biafran children’s stories simply stop. The registers end, the follow-up thins out, and the children themselves grow up as Gabonese, most never knowing there had once been a village in the East waiting for them.
