This historical photograph shows Burkina Faso’s President Blaise Compaoré welcoming Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to Ouagadougou on 15 October 2007.

Blaise Compaoré came to power after the 1987 coup in which revolutionary leader Thomas Sankara was killed. He would go on to rule Burkina Faso for 27 years, until mass protests forced him from office in 2014.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, widely known as Lula, rose from humble beginnings as a factory worker and trade union leader to become one of Brazil’s most influential presidents. His administration strengthened Brazil’s ties with Africa through trade, diplomacy, and South–South cooperation.

The date of this meeting is especially significant. It took place exactly 20 years after Thomas Sankara’s assassination—the event that brought Compaoré to power. What appeared to be a routine state visit also carried deep historical symbolism, linking one of Africa’s most debated leaders with one of Latin America’s most celebrated politicians.

History often reminds us that behind every photograph lies a much bigger story.
