Long before the Statue of Liberty became the symbol recognized around the world today, its original concept is said to have represented a freed Black woman stepping into liberty.

The early vision portrayed her standing proudly with broken chains at her feet a powerful symbol of liberation from slavery and the enduring struggle for freedom.

Inscribed on the tablet was JULY IV MDCCLXXVI, while the original sketch identified the figure as “Freed Woman Stepping into Liberty.”

The original vision by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi was to honor the end of slavery and the promise of freedom for all. Although the final design changed over time, the broken chains remain a lasting reminder of that original symbolism.

History is often more layered than many realize. Sometimes the earliest ideas behind iconic monuments tell stories that deserve to be revisited and discussed.
