THE FORGOTTEN HISTORY OF THE TUTSI: WHEN HEIGHT BECAME PART OF A DEADLY STEREOTYPE

Before the horrors of 1994, the Tutsi people of Rwanda and Burundi were widely recognized for their remarkable height. Early explorers, missionaries, and anthropologists often described many Tutsi men as among the tallest people in Africa, drawing comparisons with the Nilotic peoples of present-day South Sudan.

But what should have been nothing more than a physical characteristic was twisted into a dangerous myth.

During the colonial era, European administrators promoted false racial theories that portrayed the Tutsi as a separate and “superior” race. These ideas deepened divisions between communities that had lived together for generations and planted seeds of hatred that would have devastating consequences.

Then came 1994.

Over the course of about 100 days, around 800,000 people—mostly Tutsi, along with moderate Hutu who opposed the killings—were murdered in one of the worst genocides since the Second World War.

The genocide was not because the Tutsi were tall. It was driven by extremist ideology and ethnic hatred. However, at roadblocks and during house-to-house searches, killers sometimes relied on physical stereotypes—including height and facial features—when identity cards were unavailable. Those stereotypes were so unreliable that some Hutu were also killed after being mistaken for Tutsi.

Today, Rwanda has chosen the path of reconciliation over revenge, rebuilding a nation from unimaginable loss.

History reminds us that when lies are turned into “facts” and people are judged by their appearance or identity, humanity pays the highest price.

Never Again is not just a slogan—it is a responsibility.

🕊️ May the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi continue to rest in peace, and may the world never forget where hatred can lead.

  1. PRAYER FOR TODAY | Monday, July 20, 2026 🔥

Father, in the name of Jesus, let Your Word in Joel 2:25 come alive in our lives: “I will restore to you the years the locust has eaten.”

I decree that this week, every lost opportunity, blessing, favor, and breakthrough is restored. You will celebrate early answers to your prayers. Every delay is turned into divine speed, and every closed door opens by the power of God.

Whatsoever you have lost, receive it back in greater measure. This week, you shall rejoice, testify, and return with songs of victory.

    In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
