At just 24 years old, Nico Williams is a European champion and a World Cup winner.

In 1993, Maria and Felix, the parents of Iñaki and Nico Williams, paid people smugglers to take them from Ghana to Europe in search of a better life.

Their journey was unimaginable. They crossed the Sahara Desert, were thrown out of their truck, and were forced to walk through the desert without food or water. Felix still carries the pain in the soles of his feet from walking across the burning sand to this day.

After days of suffering, they finally reached Melilla, a Spanish enclave. They were arrested upon arrival for not having the proper documents and faced deportation, until a lawyer stepped in. He advised them to say they were from Liberia, a country affected by war, allowing them to apply for asylum as refugees.

Eventually, the couple settled in the Basque Country, where they were welcomed and supported by a local priest named Iñaki.

Years later, their sons wrote football history. Iñaki Williams, once a Spain U21 star who also represented the senior team, chose to play for Ghana. His younger brother Nico stayed loyal to Spain — and came off the bench to provide the assist for the winning goal in the World Cup Final.
