The legal team of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu says it will take legal action against a television guest and the station that hosted him, after the guest urged the Nigerian government to kill Kanu.

The remark was made by Chigozie Nnabugwu during a programme on News Central Television. Kanu’s special counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, said Nnabugwu called on the government to kill Kanu “for normalcy to return to the Southeast.” A clip of the comment was posted on the station’s verified X account on July 19 and spread quickly online.

In a statement on Tuesday, Ejimakor called the remark “reckless, irresponsible and unlawful” and said it amounted to a call for an extrajudicial killing. He argued it could fall under Section 24(1) of the Cybercrimes Act, which covers electronic messages that threaten life or public order, and said the broadcaster could face regulatory questions for airing it. The lawyers asked Nnabugwu for a public retraction and News Central for a televised apology, and said their notice should be treated as a step before going to court.

IPOB responded separately through its spokesman, Emma Powerful. In a memo dated July 20, the group condemned the comment and said harming Kanu would not bring calm to the South-East but would instead deepen support for the Biafra cause. IPOB also alleged a wider plot against its leader and named several public figures it plans to sue. Those claims have not been tested in court, and the people named were not reported as responding to them.

Kanu was convicted on terrorism charges in November 2025 and sentenced to life in prison. He is held at a correctional centre in Sokoto while his appeal is before the Court of Appeal.
