MAY THE SOULS OF THESE 42 OFFICERS REST IN PEACE …

On this day 27th July, 1990, Major Gideon Orkar and 41 other soldiers were filed out, driven to the Firing Range of Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, Lagos and executed in batches based on the number the stakes can accommodate at a time. These executions were carried out by soldiers led by the commander Brigade of Guards; Col. John Inienger (incidentally a Tiv just like Orkar). Prominent among these 41 others were Capts; Empere, Dakolo, Lts; Odey, Ozoalor, Umukoro etc. It must also be noted that those arrested, tried and executed here appear to be the skeletal part of the plot as the main engineers escaped. These included; Lt. Col Nyiam, Majors; Mukoro, Obahor, Edoja, Capt Tolofari, Okekumatalor etc. It is regrettable to see Okekumatalor escape while Lt. Umukoro whom he only convinced on the night of the coup executed. This may be the reason why some of the plotters complained while about being killed and it led to the retrial by Major. Gen. Y. Y. Kure panel which would be discussed when the time comes. MAY THE SOULS OF THESE 42 OFFICERS REST IN PEACE …
