The Golden Drum Everyone Gave Away
The Golden Drum Everyone Gave Away
Some treasures shine because they are made of gold.
And some treasures shine because they carry the soul of a people.
This is the story of a kingdom that lost both… because it never knew what it truly had.
For generations, an old drum sat quietly in the center of the kingdom. It was brought out only during great festivals, royal celebrations, and times of victory. Children played around it. Elders beat it to gather the people. To everyone in the kingdom, it was simply an old drum that had always been there.
One season, a group of strangers arrived from a distant land. They walked through the marketplace, admired the farms, and greeted the people with warm smiles. But whenever they passed the village square, their eyes always rested on the old drum.
They asked the elders, “Would you sell us that drum?”
The villagers laughed.
“That old thing?” one elder replied. “It has been here longer than anyone can remember.”
The strangers returned the next day.
This time, they brought colorful beads, bright cloth, polished mirrors, and shiny ornaments. They laid them before the people and repeated their offer.
Some elders became suspicious.
“Why would visitors travel so far for an ordinary drum?” they whispered.
But others shook their heads.
“It’s just old wood covered in faded metal,” they said. “These gifts are far more beautiful.”
After days of debate, the kingdom accepted the exchange. The strangers smiled quietly, loaded the drum onto their wagon, and disappeared over the horizon.
The village celebrated what they believed was a wonderful bargain.
Years passed.
The colorful beads lost their shine. The cloth faded. The mirrors cracked. The ornaments were forgotten.
Then scholars and traveling historians visited the kingdom. After hearing the story, they were shocked.
The drum had not been ordinary at all.
It had been crafted from pure gold centuries earlier by master artisans. More than that, it carried the history of the kingdom. Every carving told the story of victories, traditions, ancestors, and generations of wisdom. It was a priceless treasure that could never be replaced.
The elders searched for the drum, but it was gone.
All that remained was regret… and the lesson they passed on to every child born after them.
Lesson:
Never trade away what you do not fully understand. Africa’s greatest treasures are not only beneath its soil, but they also live in its culture, history, traditions, and identity. Their true value can never be measured by the price someone is willing to pay.
