The political fallout between Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and his former personal doctor

The political fallout between Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and his former personal doctor and ally, Kizza Besigye, began in the late 1990s when Besigye publicly accused the government of abandoning the original democratic ideals of their bush war. This split transformed close comrades into fierce rivals, leading Besigye to challenge Museveni in multiple presidential elections and face decades of arrests, crackdowns, and ongoing legal battles..

He is currently facing trial for treason and misprision of treason (concealment of treason)

In his initial military court appearance, he was accused of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition—specifically, two pistols and eight rounds of ammunition allegedly found while he was in Nairobi. While the civilian court sheet focuses strictly on capital treason, the state continues to use these weapon allegations as part of its core evidence.

Besigye helped Museveni get into power by participating in the Luwero Bush war, and then, immediately, started resisting him when he veered off the original aims and objectives of NRM/NRA- that’s bravely, courage, character, principled- all combined together. We don’t have many Besigyes now in Uganda, do we? He is a legend!

Its easier to be a president in a developing country for a long time, than being an opposition leader for as long as both Kizza Besigye and Kenya’s Raila Odinga, have been. Actually, its not easy to oppose someone as determined to stay in power as Museveni, for as long as Besigye has done. Many have come to oppose museveni, from Ssemo, Norbert Mao,Francis Bwengye, Olara Otunnu, Chappa Karuhanga, Mrs.Obote herself and her son, Jimmy Akena, Miria R K Matembe, Hajji Ssebagala,Mayanja Kibirige,e.t.c, but havent lasted long. Now, we have you- know- who, and i’m wondering how long he will last. So, I give my biggest prize to Kizza Besigye- It hasnt been an easy journey at all- It has been full of sacrifices including the loss of his brother. Museveni never lost of any his siblings, close relatives, or parents, while fighting Obote. He found his father and mother both intact and in full life after the war.
