THE NIGHT NELSON MANDELA WAS SECRETLY TREATED IN KENYA BY DANIEL ARAP MOI’S DOCTOR

Few people know that shortly after his release from prison, Nelson Mandela made a low-profile emergency stop in Nairobi — and Kenya quietly played a role in saving his health.
In 1990, Mandela became ill while travelling in Africa. When he arrived in Nairobi, he was reportedly suffering from pneumonia and needed medical attention.
What happened next was kept remarkably discreet.
Mandela was taken to Nairobi Hospital, where he was treated by Dr David Silverstein, who was then the personal physician of Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi.
According to accounts later published about the incident, Moi instructed officials to ensure that Mandela’s medical visit remained away from the cameras and media. Mandela was taken for treatment without the usual public attention surrounding one of the world’s most famous political figures.
The significance of the moment was enormous.
Mandela had only recently walked out of 27 years of imprisonment under apartheid. He was beginning his journey toward becoming South Africa’s first democratically elected president.
And during that difficult period, Kenya quietly became part of his story. 🇰🇪🤝🇿🇦
Dr Silverstein later recalled treating Mandela, while accounts of the episode describe Moi personally helping facilitate the discreet medical arrangements.
It is a fascinating reminder that African history is sometimes made not only in presidential palaces, parliaments and battlefields — but also behind the closed doors of a hospital.
