As I woke up today, August 23rd, my heart was filled with gratitude and reflection. As a Jamaican-born person looking out across the Caribbean toward Haiti, I’m reminded of how deeply interconnected our history and strength truly are.
On this very day, August 23, 1791, the brave Haitian people rose up against the transatlantic slave trade—a brutal system where our ancestors were captured, traded, and brought across the Americas. That spark ignited the Haitian Revolution (1791–1804), creating the world’s first independent Black republic and dealing a fatal blow to the institution of slavery across the globe.
As we give thanks for our modern blessings today, let’s honor the strength, courage, and legacy of resistance passed down to us. Praying for peace, health, and abundant blessings over every single one of you, both here in the US and across the world! Have a beautiful Sunday.
