On 5 August 1962, Nelson Mandela was arrested near Howick, South Africa.

He was fighting against apartheid—a system that denied millions of Black South Africans their basic rights.

After his trial, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964. He would spend 27 years behind bars, much of that time on Robben Island.

Years later, he walked out of prison as a free man, and history would remember him as one of the greatest symbols of courage and reconciliation.
