KWAME NKRUMAH SURVIVED FIVE ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS.

But the number alone does not tell the story.

The deeper question is:

Why did so many people want Kwame Nkrumah dead?

Nkrumah was not simply a politician.

He had helped lead Ghana to independence in 1957 and became one of the most powerful voices for African political independence and unity.

But his government also became increasingly authoritarian.

Political opponents were detained. Opposition groups were pushed underground or into exile. His government increasingly treated political resistance as a threat to the survival of the state.

And as the political divide deepened, violence entered the struggle for power.

Then came the attempts.

💣 1955: Nkrumah’s residence was bombed.

💣 1961: Bomb attacks shook Accra, including an explosion that destroyed his statue outside Parliament. Historical accounts also describe a planned attempt to shoot him at the airport.

💣 1962: At Kulungugu, a bomb concealed in a bouquet exploded as Nkrumah greeted the crowd. Nkrumah survived, but innocent people around him were killed and dozens were injured.

💥 1962: Further explosions followed around Flagstaff House and Accra, as Ghana entered a period of extraordinary political violence. Contemporary reporting described a city shaken by bombings, deaths and hundreds of injuries.

🔫 1964: A policeman opened fire on Nkrumah inside the grounds of Flagstaff House.

He survived.

But his loyal security officer Salifu Dagarti was killed while moving toward the attacker.

Nkrumah then physically wrestled with the would-be assassin until help arrived.

And this is the part that should make us stop.

Imagine surviving one attempt on your life.

Then another.

Then another.

Imagine looking at the people around you and wondering:

Who can I trust?

Nkrumah himself later wrote that members of the police and Special Branch had been involved in, or had ignored, attempts against his life. That was his account of the increasingly poisonous security and political environment surrounding him.

But history is rarely simple.

Not every conspiracy allegation surrounding Nkrumah was proven.

Some accusations were fiercely disputed.

Some people convicted in connection with the Kulungugu bombing were later released after Nkrumah’s government was overthrown.

And the broader political struggle involved much more than one man.

It was a battle over who would control Ghana’s future.

A battle between government and opposition.

Between nationalism and competing visions of Ghana’s political direction.

Between the desire for African unity and the fears of those who believed Nkrumah was concentrating too much power.

And eventually, the violence surrounding his rule would culminate not in another assassination attempt, but in the military coup of February 1966 that removed him from power.

So when we say:

“Kwame Nkrumah survived five assassination attempts,”

we should not hear only a story about a man who escaped death.

We should hear the story of a young nation entering one of the most dangerous periods of its political history.

Because every failed attempt left something behind:

A dead security officer.

Injured civilians.

A frightened population.

A more heavily guarded president.

And a country becoming increasingly divided.

Nkrumah survived.

But Ghana was being changed by the violence surrounding him.

And perhaps that is the most haunting lesson.

Sometimes a leader survives the bullet — but the country still carries the wound.

History is never just about who survived.
It is also about what survival cost everyone else.
