One of the biggest misconceptions about Christianity is that Europeans introduced it to Africa during slavery and colonization.

History tells a very different story.

🇪🇹 ETHIOPIA HAS ONE OF THE OLDEST CONTINUOUS CHRISTIAN TRADITIONS IN THE WORLD.

Christianity became firmly established in the ancient African Kingdom of Aksum during the 4th century AD under King Ezana—more than 1,000 years before the transatlantic slave trade and long before European colonial powers divided Africa.

According to ancient accounts, Frumentius, a Christian from the eastern Mediterranean, became connected to the Aksumite royal court and helped educate the young Prince Ezana. After Ezana became king, Christianity received royal support and became deeply rooted in the kingdom.

📖 AND ETHIOPIA PRESERVED SOME OF CHRISTIANITY’S MOST EXTRAORDINARY ANCIENT SCRIPTURES.

The famous Garima Gospels, preserved at Ethiopia’s Abba Garima Monastery, have been dated to approximately the 5th–7th centuries AD. They contain the four Gospels written in Geʽez, the ancient liturgical language of Ethiopia, and are considered among the oldest surviving complete illustrated Gospel manuscripts in the world.

Think about that: African Christians were preserving and illustrating Christian scripture roughly 1,500 years ago.

And there’s even more.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church maintains an ancient biblical tradition with a broader canon than the 66-book Protestant Bible familiar to most Americans. Its traditional canon is commonly described as containing 81 books and includes ancient writings such as 1 Enoch and Jubilees.

Ethiopia played an especially important role in preserving these ancient religious writings through its Geʽez manuscript tradition.

⚠️ You may have heard that Ethiopia possesses the world’s oldest “untampered-with Bible.” That’s a popular description, but historians cannot establish that a single Ethiopian Bible remained completely unchanged for thousands of years.

The documented history is powerful enough without exaggeration.

✊🏾 Christianity was established in Africa centuries before European colonialism.

✊🏾 African Christians were preserving scripture more than a millennium before enslaved Africans were transported to the Americas.

✊🏾 Ethiopia developed one of the world’s oldest continuously surviving Christian traditions.

✊🏾 Ancient Ethiopian manuscripts preserved Christian writings that disappeared in their complete form from many other Christian traditions.

And Ethiopia wasn’t alone. Egypt and North Africa were major centers of Christianity during the earliest centuries of the faith, producing churches, theologians and Christian scholarship long before Christianity reached many parts of northern Europe.

So Christianity cannot accurately be reduced to simply “the white man’s religion.”

Yes, Europeans later used distorted interpretations of Christianity to justify slavery, colonialism and racial oppression. That history must be acknowledged.

But European exploitation of Christianity is not the same thing as the origins of Christianity—and it does not erase Africa’s ancient Christian history.
