Garba Nadama: Sokoto’s Second Civilian Governor

Garba Nadama (11 November 1938 – 4 May 2020) was a Nigerian politician and public servant who served as the second civilian Governor of Sokoto State during Nigeria’s Second Republic.

A member of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), Nadama became governor in January 1982 following the death of his predecessor, Shehu Kangiwa, who died in a polo accident in 1981 while still in office.

Nadama inherited a state that was considerably larger than present-day Sokoto. At the time, Sokoto included territories that would later become Kebbi and Zamfara states.

His administration focused on maintaining stability and continuity in government while pursuing development in areas such as agriculture, education and local government administration.

His tenure came during one of the most politically challenging periods of Nigeria’s Second Republic. Economic difficulties, political tensions and disagreements within the ruling party increasingly tested the young democratic system.

Nadama’s time in office ended in November 1983 following the military coup that brought the Second Republic to an end. Major-General Muhammadu Buhari became Head of State, and civilian governors across the country were removed from office.

Although his governorship lasted less than two years, Nadama became part of an important chapter in Nigeria’s democratic history, the brief experiment with civilian government between 1979 and 1983.

He remained a respected elder in Sokoto and northern Nigeria after leaving office.

Garba Nadama died on 4 May 2020, aged 81.

His story is a reminder of a generation of Nigerian leaders who served during the country’s early attempts to establish a lasting democratic tradition.
