🌍 AFTER MORE THAN 450 YEARS, THE WORLD IS FINALLY BEING FORCED TO SEE AFRICA AS IT REALLY IS!

For generations, the world looked at a map and unconsciously learned a lie. A lie printed in classrooms. A lie hanging on office walls. A lie repeated in textbooks. A lie projected onto television screens.

AFRICA WAS NEVER SMALL. THE MAP MADE IT LOOK SMALL.

On 4 September 2026, the United Nations General Assembly took a historic step towards correcting one of the world’s oldest visual distortions. The resolution, known as “Correct the Map”, was led by Togo and supported by the African Union and African states, encouraging the world to move towards map projections that represent the relative sizes of continents more accurately, including the Equal Earth projection.

The vote was clear:
🌍 164 countries — YES
🇺🇸 1 country — NO
✋🏿 6 countries — ABSTAINED

This was not just about geography. It was about perception. Because maps are not innocent. Maps shape how we see the world. They shape education. They shape imagination. They shape perceptions of power, importance and place.

For more than four centuries, the widely used Mercator projection made countries and continents closer to the poles appear disproportionately larger while shrinking regions around the Equator.

Africa paid the visual price. For generations, children grew up looking at a continent that appeared smaller than it truly is. Many people were made to believe Africa was just another small piece of land somewhere beneath Europe. But the truth has always been there.

AFRICA IS A GIANT.
🌍 Africa covers approximately 30.37 million square kilometres. Africa is the second-largest continent on Earth after Asia. Its true geographical scale is absolutely staggering. You can fit enormous parts of the world inside Africa when their land areas are properly compared. The United States. China. India. Japan. Mexico. The United Kingdom. Spain. Italy. Portugal and large portions of Europe.

Many of these countries and regions can collectively fit within Africa’s vast geographical footprint.

Think about that for a moment….. The world taught us to look at Africa as if it were small. Yet Africa is roughly: 🇺🇸 Three times the size of the United States. 🇮🇳 More than nine times the size of India. 🇪🇺 More than three times the size of Europe.

Perhaps, the greatest example of the Mercator distortion is this: On many traditional maps, Greenland appears almost as large as Africa. But Africa is actually approximately 14 times larger than Greenland. FOURTEEN TIMES!

So how did such a massive continent end up looking so small in the minds of generations? The answer lies partly in the map projection. The Mercator projection was developed by Gerardus Mercator in 1569, primarily for navigation. It was useful for sailors and navigation because of the way it preserved direction and angles. But there was a price. The farther landmasses are from the Equator, the more their size is exaggerated. Regions closer to the poles appear much larger. Regions around the Equator appear relatively smaller.

Africa did not shrink. The projection distorted the world around it. That distortion became normal.
It entered classrooms. Textbooks. Newsrooms. Governments. Businesses. Technology. The minds of billions.

That is why correcting the map matters. Because sometimes oppression is not only enforced through chains, guns and economic systems. Sometimes it is taught through images. Sometimes it is planted through education. Sometimes it is hidden in plain sight on the wall of a classroom.

For centuries, Africa has been told directly and indirectly that it is small. Small in geography. Small in power. Small in importance. Small in influence.

But Africa is not small. AFRICA HAS NEVER BEEN SMALL. The continent is home to 54 countries and approximately 1.59 billion people. It is the cradle of humankind. The birthplace of civilization. A continent blessed with immense land, minerals, rivers, rainforest, forests, wildlife, cultures, languages and human potential. Yet despite its size and wealth, Africa continues to suffer from systems designed during and after colonialism.

That is why correcting the map must not be the end of the conversation. IT MUST BE THE BEGINNING OF A BIGGER CONVERSATION. Now that the world is beginning to correct the way it sees Africa on the map, Africa must continue correcting the systems that keep Africans divided and exploited.

✊🏿 Correct the exploitation of Africa’s minerals.
✊🏿 Correct the colonial borders that divided African families and nations.
✊🏿 Correct the education systems that teach African children to admire everyone except themselves.
✊🏿 Correct the economic structures that keep Africa exporting raw materials and importing finished products.
✊🏿 Correct the mental chains that survived long after colonial flags were lowered.

Because a fair world cannot be built on an unfair picture of the world.
THE FIGHT FOR AFRICA’S DIGNITY IS NOT ONLY ABOUT HOW BIG AFRICA LOOKS ON A MAP. It is about how Africa sees itself. It is about how Africans see one another. It is about how the world treats Africa. Above all, it is about whether Africans are ready to reclaim their rightful place in history.

Africa does not need anyone to make it big. AFRICA IS ALREADY BIG. Africa does not need anyone to give it dignity. AFRICA ALREADY HAS DIGNITY. Africa does not need permission to rise. AFRICA MUST RISE BECAUSE IT IS OUR TIME.

For centuries, the world has been looking at a distorted image of Africa. Now the map is beginning to change. But comrades, let us remember: CHANGING THE MAP IS NOT ENOUGH. We must change the systems. We must change the mindset. We must change the borders in our minds. We must change the economic relationship between Africa and the rest of the world. We must industrialise. We must unite. We must trade with one another. We must build African institutions. We must protect African resources. We must restore African dignity. Because Africa was never the problem. THE WAY THE WORLD WAS TAUGHT TO SEE AFRICA WAS THE PROBLEM.

What Africa needs is economic freedom. What Africa needs is Africans who understand that our liberation will never be delivered from Washington, London, Paris or Beijing. IT MUST COME FROM US.

AFRICA WAS NEVER SMALL. THE MAP MADE IT LOOK SMALL. AFRICA WAS NEVER WEAK. DIVISION AND EXPLOITATION MADE IT APPEAR WEAK. AFRICA WAS NEVER WITHOUT POTENTIAL. THE WORLD HAS BEEN FEASTING ON THAT POTENTIAL FOR CENTURIES.

Now the world is beginning to correct the map. THE NEXT REVOLUTION IS TO CORRECT THE SYSTEM.

WE ARE AFRICANS, AND AFRICA IS OUR BUSINESS!
