Legendary Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, widely known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84, his family confirmed on Wednesday.

In an official statement issued on behalf of the family, his loved ones remembered the iconic performer with deep reverence, describing his passing with the words: “It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo.”

Jacobs had stepped away from the spotlight in recent years following his diagnosis with Lewy body dementia—a progressive neurological condition that his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, first publicly disclosed in 2021.

Renowned for his commanding screen presence, resonant voice, and regal authority, Jacobs was widely regarded as one of the founding pillars of modern Nigerian cinema. After completing his dramatic training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, he established a career spanning British television, international cinema, and over 100 Nigerian films.

Alongside Joke Silva, Jacobs co-founded the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, playing a crucial role in mentoring talent and professionalizing the Nigerian entertainment sector.

Throughout his multi-decade career, he earned widespread industry acclaim, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007. In 2011, his contributions to the nation’s culture and arts were formally recognized when he was conferred with the national honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

Jacobs is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, as well as his children and grandchildren. Tributes continue to pour in across Africa and the global film community to honor his legacy.
